What to do if someone is dead drunk
(i.e. "supervision of inebriated persons")
- Try to ascertain whether the person's blood alcohol
level has peaked - did they stop drinking a couple of hours ago? Were they
drinking at a constant and steady rate? Or did they imbibe a large quantity
shortly before collapsing? In the latter case it is likely that their blood
alcohol level may continue to increase and they will need very close
supervision.
- Put the person to bed, lying on their side or stomach -
this is to avoid inhalation of own vomit. Keep the person warm.
- Check the person's condition frequently, at least every
half hour.
- If the person becomes unconscious (cannot be roused)
call an ambulance without delay.
- As the person starts to recover, give lots of liquids
to aid re-hydration. On no account allow the person to consume more alcohol.
It does not alleviate a hangover and can be extremely dangerous.
