Impact of Alcohol on Mental Health Mental Health can be affected when the person is drinking and when they are withdrawing from alcohol, some mental and psychological health problems may even persist after drinking has ceased. Many of the psychological effects of alcohol are mediated the effects it has on the neurotransmitters in our brain.
The mechanism through which alcohol affects neurotransmission is as yet still unclear and factors such as biological differences between individuals will also add to the complexity of its true influence. The answer will likely lie in multiple effects on multiple systems involving more than one neurotransmitter and more than one brain area. It may well include all the chemicals mentioned here and even some of those that are not yet discovered or linked to alcohol. The information on this and other pages relating to the effects of alcohol on our body, our emotions and our behaviour, has been collated by looking at a variety of studies some of which have been validated by repeating and expanding previous research and some of which are still in their infancy.
So far no absolute mechanism for the effects alcohol has on our thoughts and behaviours has been elucidated, perhaps explaining why there is still so much controversy over the causes, the effects and the best treatments for alcohol problems.
