Back to apas annual report contents
The
recycling scheme at apas continues to be a success and has been extended to
include recycling of drinks cartons, a wider range of plastics as well as
clothes, shoes and bric-a-brac for donation to local charity shops. The book, video and CD library and shop continues to
thrive with an influx of recycled books and videos that can be borrowed or
bought with funds donated to the apas to extend and improve the services we
provide. Free low energy light bulbs are still available to clients courtesy of Powergen and apas are happy to advise service users on ideas for saving energy around the home all of which adds up to extra cash in their pockets!
apas provides training programmes on a number of subjects
including:
If you would like more information on any of our training programmes or if you want to discuss your own specialised training needs and requirements then please contact Nick Tegerdine on (0115) 941 4747 ext 48053 or e-mail him at nick@apas.org.uk. All staff, students and volunteers at apas undergo a comprehensive training programme with continuing learning and development through out their time with us.
As well as continuing with all our old favourites including our apas Direct drop in service and alcoline Helpline service, which are still available in the evenings and on Saturdays, apas has been busy expanding to fill more gaps in service provision and reach more people in need of advice and support. New and improved services for 2004/2005
We continue to invest in the training and development of our staff, both paid and unpaid
The
popularity of our website continues to grow with an increase of over 30% in
visitors, from around 4000 hits last year to just over 6000 this year. Our
website goes from strength to strength and has been further developed and
improved to include a search site for people to find specific information from
pages through out our site and a whats on our website to help people navigate
around more easily. Other additions and improvements include:
So why don’t you visit us on the web today?!
The
Practice Learning Unit has now achieved its first birthday! The year has
presented a number of challenges for us, but also significant success.
The
Team has, with support and encouragement from colleagues, offered 26 placements
to students from the following Universities:
Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Derby, De Montfort, Leicester School of
Social Work, Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam.
The Partnership with the Nottinghamshire County Council Practice Learning
Team is an important addition to our capacity to ensure that Practice Teachers /
Assessors are enabled to participate in ongoing training and career development.
An
approach by Nottingham School of Nursing has lead to a successful placement with
another student commencing in October. The
relationship with the School of Nursing enables us to participate in their
training events, providing a range of knowledge beyond established social work
methods – particularly on inter-agency / inter-disciplinary partnerships. Interagency
partnerships are highly valued and we aim to respond positively to approaches
from Community Organisations who state an interest in co-working generally and
specifically as a means to offering their paid and / or voluntary Staff a wider
spectrum of training and learning opportunities. Currently
placement requests substantially exceed our capacity, primarily in terms of
accommodation, so the prospect of expanding is an exciting one.
There is no doubt that we could double our intake, but we are aware of
the importance of maintaining the high standards that we have set ourselves and
are optimistic that by careful use of our current resources we can maintain if
not exceed them. The
Induction / Training programme, which is continually under development and
review, is tailored to meet individual students’ identified learning needs and
we continue to make good use of not only expertise within apas, but also from
partnership organisations including Universities and Community Groups.
One
of our major objectives this year will be to ensure that students with
disabilities are enabled to take advantage of placements at apas.
Experience has highlighted significant gaps in provision and we are in
discussion with Universities to identify and address the practical needs of
students at an earlier stage so preparation can be made well in advance of the
placement. The
coming year is of crucial importance to the PLU and apas, we will
undoubtedly face a number of challenges! For
more information on placements at apas or the PLU generally please contact
