Asylum Seekers Study
Alcohol & Young People
Educating Young People

apas works to reduce harm in the community, the services we provide are not only focused on the individual we look at the family, the community and also the effects on society. To this end we are always looking at ways in which services can be developed, expanded and improved. We try to encourage people to consider the bigger picture including health, environmental & education to name but a few.

Part of this also involves researching areas where services maybe lacking or gathering information on the sub groups of communities that may not get the help and support they need. To this end apas has applied for, and being granted, one off funding donations to enable us to focus on two vulnerable groups within our community we felt needed more support, awareness and perhaps a different approach to main stream adult services.

1) The Asylum Seekers Project

Without a concerted attempt to address alcohol related issues within asylum seeking communities, issues such as regeneration, social cohesion, sustainable development, quality of life, and social inclusion will all be placed outside of the realistic scope of those with problematic alcohol consumption.

2) Alcohol and Young People

Substance is a growing problem among young people despite government education and awareness campaigns, a number of initiatives have been set up aimed at reducing drug use among Britain's school aged young people but in comparison the emphasis on Alcohol - the gateway drug, is far less.

3) Educating Young People around Alcohol and Drug use

Education was named as one of the four key areas in the governments national alcohol harm reduction strategy and one group highlighted to receive additional education and awareness around alcohol were young people. Furthermore the government plans to involve young people in developing education to ensure that they receive the information they want and need. apas has carried out a project in North Nottinghamshire secondary schools to look at current trends and attitudes in alcohol and drug use among young people and also investigated the types of education pupils were receiving and which of these they felt to be interesting, useful and provocative of change.
