Alcohol
and Young People This
project attempts to measure the level of need of young people within
Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council Area 7 in relation to
school exclusions and alcohol. Data has been gathered from questionnaires
completed by professionals working closely with this group of young people,
mainly Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Co-ordinators within schools in both the above given areas. The
report concludes that, whilst the majority of young people may make a successful
transition into adulthood and experience few alcohol related problems there is
another, more worrying, group of young people who present as vulnerable and who
are highly susceptible to experiencing problems related to high alcohol usage. Lack
of parental support, peer pressure and a lack of understanding from school staff
of alcohol problems generally, all appear to result in this group of people
using alcohol to dangerous degrees both within school and their wider
communities. In addition, the report concludes that there is scope for consideration of how those people working closely with school age children can effectively identify alcohol problems and further, how schools can effectively record absences to reflect the real level of need in terms of young people who are using alcohol. Furthermore, the report identifies that there is a need to develop a countywide strategy to enable appropriate alcohol agencies to develop a structured approach to implement within schools throughout the City and County of Nottinghamshire.
